In an interview with The New York Times, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the American military presence in Greenland is not sufficient and that the ownership of the island is crucial from a psychological standpoint for the success of the United States. Trump emphasized that ownership provides advantages that cannot be obtained through simple agreements or treaties.
He also mentioned that, in his opinion, the NATO alliance would be useless without U.S. contributions. In the context of national security, the White House reaffirmed that Greenland is a priority, and the use of American military forces is a viable option. Although the U.S. has a defense agreement with Denmark from 1951 that allows them access to Greenland, any new military base would require Denmark's approval. Currently, the U.S. has only one military base in Greenland, Thule Air Base.
