The President of the USA, Donald Trump, has avoided choosing a favorite in the race for the Republican nomination in 2028, praising Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In an interview with NBC News, Trump left open the possibility of a joint candidacy between the two, emphasizing that both are extremely capable. Vance, a former senator from Ohio, stated that he will discuss a possible candidacy with Trump after the midterm elections in November. Rubio, who lost to Trump in 2016, did not rule out a candidacy but praised Vance as a potential strong candidate.
Trump suggested that a Vance-Rubio combination would be "very hard to beat" and mentioned the differences in style between the two. He also hinted again at the possibility of running for a third term, although this would be unconstitutional.
