Archaeologists have discovered a treasure of 409 gold coins from the period of the Russian Empire, hidden under a house in Torjok, with an estimated value of over 500,000 dollars.

A team of archaeologists has discovered a treasure consisting of 409 gold coins, dating from the decline period of the Russian Empire, under a house in the town of Torjok, located 420 kilometers southeast of St. Petersburg. The coins, minted between 1848 and 1911, include 387 coins of 10 rubles, 10 of 5 rubles, 10 of 15 rubles, and two of 7.5 rubles.

The treasure, valued at over 500,000 dollars, was likely hidden during or after the Russian Revolution, and researchers speculate that the owner intended to return to recover it. Although 24 families lived in the area at the end of the 19th century, it is not known exactly which family hid the savings. The coins will be transferred to the Historical and Ethnographic Museum of Russia for preservation.
