The disruption occurred two days before the transit agreement between Ukraine and Gazprom was due to expire, as Kiev refused to extend it. All gas supplies from Gazprom to Moldova are routed to the pro pro pro-democracy Transnistrian region. Moldova has urged Gazprom to consider other routes to supply the country, but Gazprom has refused, making acceptance conditional on payment of debts.
