Three mountaineers, a 60-year-old couple and their 62-year-old brother-in-law, were killed by lightning at an altitude of 2,268 meters during an unexpected thunderstorm on Mittag summit. After the weather deteriorated, the group started to descend but never returned and were declared missing. The bodies were later discovered by a rescue helicopter. The incident, considered extremely rare, sparked a strong reaction in Austria, where climbing is a popular activity. Experts advise caution and the use of weather apps to prevent such tragedies.
