The European Commission treats the US warnings regarding possible trade tariffs as mere online statements and asserts that it will only react in the case of official decisions adopted at the executive level.

The European Union will not react to possible trade tariffs announced by the United States in connection with Iran unless they materialize into official decisions, the European Commission has conveyed, emphasizing that, so far, the signals coming from Washington are limited to statements on social media.

In short

The US has suggested imposing tariffs of 25% against countries that continue trade relations with Iran.

The EU considers that, for now, this is just about online messages, without legal effect.

Any European reaction will depend on the adoption of concrete executive acts by the US.

Brussels remains focused on implementing the existing EU–US trade framework.

Reiterated during the daily briefing in Brussels about recent statements from the American administration regarding possible trade tariffs applicable to countries that trade with Iran, the European Commission specified that it cannot react to mere posts on social media. According to the institution, only measures officially adopted through executive acts can trigger an analysis and a response at the Union level.

Commission representatives explained that, in the absence of formal decisions, the EU remains focused on applying the EU–US joint statement in the trade area and on maintaining transatlantic dialogue. Any assessment regarding the impact of potential tariffs would only be carried out after the publication of clear legal texts by the American authorities.

The position of Brussels reflects a line of caution consistently maintained in sensitive files that combine international trade with foreign and security policy. European officials have avoided speculating on hypothetical scenarios related to escalating tensions in the Middle East or the indirect effects on global trade relations.

At the same time, the Commission emphasized that the EU coordinates foreign and trade policies within the framework of existing treaties and international obligations, and any reaction to potential American measures will respect this framework.
