The United States has sent the first plane with humanitarian aid to Cuba, containing food and hygiene kits for 700 families, as part of a 100 million dollar program.

The plane took off on Tuesday from Miami, and the operation is being carried out in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The aid was initially promised in November, after Hurricane Melissa, and was accepted by Cuban authorities at the end of May. The distribution of the aid will be carried out by local parishes to prevent it from being diverted by the communist regime.

Relations between the US and Cuba remain tense, with Cuba being under an economic embargo since 1962 and going through a deep economic crisis, exacerbated by recent sanctions.

In recent months, Cuba has received humanitarian aid from various countries, including Mexico and China.
