The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the improper use of donations by the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation Inc., an entity separate from the protest movement. The investigation was initiated following a wave of contributions received during the racial justice protests in the summer of 2020. Critics have accused the organization of a lack of transparency, especially after the purchase of a house in Los Angeles for over 6 million dollars, which the foundation justified as a creative space for people of color. In 2020, the foundation raised over 90 million dollars and had assets of over 28 million dollars as of June 2024. Although the investigation is being handled by the United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, Black Lives Matter stated that it is not the target of a federal criminal investigation and that it remains committed to transparency and accountability.
