California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI, launching an inquiry into cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents associated with the artificial intelligence models developed by the company.
The California Department of Justice investigation also targets the “Hugging Face incident,” in which, in July, AI agents developed by OpenAI allegedly hacked into the open-source platform and certain components of its infrastructure. U.S. authorities are seeking to determine the scope of the incident and the security measures implemented by the company.
“My office is asking OpenAI additional questions about cybersecurity incidents and risks involving the company and its artificial intelligence models,” Bonta said.
The California investigation is taking place in parallel with the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and other artificial intelligence laboratories. The FTC is examining the risks AI agents may pose to consumers and their behavior when acting outside established limits. Bonta warned that developers who fail to meet their security responsibilities could face legal consequences.
