The United States has seized a second tanker near the coast of Venezuela, accusing it of transporting oil under American sanctions, in the context of a 'total blockade' announced by President Donald Trump. Caracas reacted vehemently, calling the action 'theft' and 'naval piracy', claiming that Washington is using fabricated accusations to overthrow Nicolás Maduro's government and take control of the country's oil resources. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, stated that the Coast Guard intercepted the vessel, named Centuries, which was carrying oil from the Venezuelan state oil company, PDVSA.
Venezuela has promised to report these acts of seizure to the United Nations Security Council, warning that they will not go unpunished. Additionally, Brazilian President Lula warned of a possible 'humanitarian catastrophe' in the event of armed conflict in Venezuela, while Iran has offered its support to combat U.S. actions.
