The United Kingdom, France, Canada, Italy, and Spain have blocked a NATO plan that required each member state to contribute 0.25% of GDP to military aid for Ukraine, according to The Telegraph. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the proposal will likely be rejected due to opposition to this fixed percentage.
This situation arises after the United Kingdom relaxed sanctions on Russian oil, which has generated controversy regarding its commitment to Ukraine. Additionally, Ukrainian and European officials were surprised by the temporary licenses issued by London for the import of Russian petroleum products.
Despite the rejection of the plan, at least seven NATO members support Rutte's initiative, which aims for a fairer distribution of the burden of support for Ukraine. The NATO summit in July, in Ankara, will be an opportunity for further discussions, and Ukrainian President Zelensky has been invited to attend.
