Torrential rains caused by a weather system called 'atmospheric river' have caused severe flooding in the Pacific Northwest, affecting Oregon, northern Washington, and British Columbia. Dozens of roads have been closed, and approximately 100,000 residents in western Washington have received evacuation orders. The most affected areas include Skagit County, where 3,800 evacuees require temporary shelter. Flooding has been severe on the Skagit, Snohomish, and Puyallup rivers, and over 30 highways have been affected. The governor of Washington has declared a state of emergency to facilitate federal aid. In British Columbia, five out of six highways to Vancouver have been closed due to flooding and avalanche risks. Meteorologists warn that such storms will become more frequent due to climate change.
