The flags of Romania and the EU, taken down from the Consulate in St. Petersburg, officially closed.

The General Consulate of Romania in Saint Petersburg ceased its activity on Friday, according to a report by the Russian news agency TASS. The diplomatic staff vacated the premises, and the flags of Romania and the European Union were lowered.

The closure of the consulate was announced on June 25, when the Russian authorities declared the Romanian consul persona non grata, in response to Romania's withdrawal of consent for the operation of the Russian Consulate in Constanta. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs justified the decision by citing previous actions of Bucharest.

The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, commented that the measure is a diplomatic reaction of reciprocity, mentioning that Romania had previously closed the Russian consulate after an incident in which a drone fell on a block in Galați, injuring two Romanian citizens.
