The EU supports 235 cross-border energy projects to accelerate interconnectivity and energy security.

Brussels, December 1, 2025 - The European Commission has granted the status of Project of Common Interest (PCI) and Project of Mutual Interest (PMI) to a number of 235 cross-border energy projects, opening their access to funding through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and to accelerated authorization procedures. The new list marks one of the most extensive energy infrastructure packages adopted so far and represents a significant step towards completing the Energy Union.

The projects can receive European funds and will be approved more quickly, to strengthen energy security and the transition to clean energy.

The Commission is preparing new measures to modernize electricity networks, so that Europe can better manage energy consumption and production in the coming years.

The selected projects, developed under the revised TEN-E regulation, include strategic investments in electricity networks, hydrogen, carbon transport infrastructure, and smart gas networks. According to the Commission, these will help Europe strengthen its energy security, reduce external dependencies, and support the transition to a decarbonized energy system. Official estimates show that the total investment needed in the Union's energy infrastructure could reach 1.5 trillion EUR between 2024 and 2040, and the newly designated projects will contribute to meeting these requirements.

The PCI or PMI status provides projects with eligibility to apply for funding from CEF Energy and to benefit from simplified administrative procedures aimed at accelerating implementation. The Commission emphasizes that cross-border infrastructure remains essential for the functioning of the Internal Energy Market and for the large-scale integration of renewable sources.

The European executive will continue to develop energy networks by presenting the "European Grids" package before the end of the year and through the "Energy Highways" initiative, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in her State of the Union speech. Both initiatives aim to address capacity bottlenecks in networks and accelerate the connection of regions facing structural limitations.

This week, the Commission is also hosting the PCI Energy Days event, dedicated to the practical implementation of the projects included on the list. The Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, will participate in discussions on how these investments can be transformed into functional infrastructure capable of supporting the competitiveness of the European industry and the EU's climate goals.
