Opponents of the military regime in Myanmar organized a joint demonstration on Wednesday, urging the population to stay home to boycott the elections scheduled for December 28. They defied severe legal sanctions to disrupt the electoral process, believing that the elections will not be free or fair and that they represent an attempt by the army to legitimize its regime, following the takeover from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.
The general strike coordination body called for a "silent strike," urging citizens to stay home between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, on International Human Rights Day. Images from Yangon and other cities showed empty streets, and authorities announced that they would seek to arrest 10 pro-democracy activists, who face up to 10 years in prison for disrupting the electoral process.
