The Norwegian government has banned smartphones in schools to combat the decline in test results. Students in grades I-VII will not use AI, while those in middle school will have limited access.

In the context of a significant decline in results in school tests, the Government of Norway has decided to ban the use of smartphones in schools. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized, in a press conference, the importance of fundamental learning, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, for students aged between 6 and 13 years, who will not be allowed to use AI. Students in middle school, aged between 14 and 16 years, will be able to use AI under the supervision of teachers, while those in high school, aged between 17 and 19 years, will learn to use these tools appropriately. The government also announced its intention to fund the purchase of books for classrooms, replacing the dependence on tablets. This measure aligns with plans to ban social media for young people under 16 years old, in order to reduce the time spent on electronic devices.
