Under the leadership of Péter Magyar, the new government of Hungary has submitted a draft constitutional amendment that would limit the terms of prime ministers to a maximum of eight years, a measure that would prevent Viktor Orbán from returning to this position. The amendment was proposed just a week after the government was installed and represents a first step in dismantling a constitution that has been modified multiple times by Fidesz, Orbán's party.
Magyar promised during the electoral campaign that he would introduce term limits to restore democratic mechanisms. Although the amendment would exclude Orbán, who has accumulated 20 years in power, it is not infallible, as a future leader with a parliamentary majority could modify the legislation again. The project also includes the abolition of the Office for the Protection of Sovereignty, accused of abuses during Orbán's government. The new government faces major challenges, including revitalizing the economy and rebuilding public services.
