The construction of the GERD dam, which began in 2011, is essential for the economic development of Ethiopia, having the capacity to produce 5,150 MW of electricity. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed states that the project will improve access to electricity and will allow for energy exports. The funding comes largely from the Central Bank of Ethiopia. However, Egypt and Sudan express their concerns regarding the security of the Nile's water supply and demand a legal agreement on the operation of the dam.
