The European Commission has referred OLAF to investigate possible links between Peter Mandelson, former European Commissioner for Trade, and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recent documents suggest that Mandelson may have provided Epstein with information about a 500 billion euro bailout plan to support the euro in 2010.

A spokesperson for the Commission confirmed that the situation is being analyzed, but no official investigations have been opened yet. Mandelson acknowledged that he made a mistake by associating with Epstein and apologized to his victims, stating that he did not commit any illegal acts. Recently, he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office but was released on bail. OLAF emphasized that it respects the presumption of innocence and is investigating all relevant information. The anti-corruption organization Transparency International welcomed the Commission's initiative to take these allegations seriously.
