The European executive announces that the internal analysis group established following the emergence of public accusations of espionage within the Permanent Representation of Hungary continues its activity. The Commission specifies that, due to the sensitive and ongoing nature of the verification, it cannot provide additional details and does not indicate a timeline for the completion of the administrative investigation.

The European Commission has confirmed that the internal verification regarding the alleged existence of a spy network within the Permanent Representation of Hungary alongside the EU is ongoing, emphasizing that the analysis is internal and that there is currently no additional information that can be made public.

In short

The internal analysis group was established last year

The verification targets the circumstances of some publicly emerged accusations

The Commission does not provide details due to the ongoing nature of the analysis

No timeline has been indicated for the completion of the verification

In the daily briefing in Brussels, Commission representatives reminded that, following the emergence of accusations regarding a possible spy network that may have operated within the Permanent Representation of Hungary, the European executive decided to launch an internal verification. A dedicated group was established to analyze the reported circumstances and assess any risks to institutional security.

According to the Commission, the group continues its activity; however, the sensitive nature of the subject and the fact that the analysis is ongoing limit public communication. Officials stated that they cannot provide further updates or details regarding preliminary conclusions or any measures.

The EU executive has avoided commenting on the political implications of the case or indicating whether the verification is related to disciplinary procedures or cooperation with external authorities, insisting that this is an internal evaluation process.

The permanent representations of the member states alongside the EU play a central role in the European decision-making process, being the main channels of coordination between capitals and the institutions in Brussels. Any suspicion related to the security of this framework is treated as a sensitive administrative and institutional matter, and the Commission applies, in such situations, internal verification procedures before drawing conclusions or publicly communicating results.
