THE EU has adopted a strategy to intensify support for its eastern regions, especially those in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, affected by hybrid warfare and migration as a weapon. Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the EU has expanded political and financial support to improve infrastructure and stimulate economic resilience.

Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto emphasized the importance of strengthening these regions as a strategic investment for Europe. The strategy focuses on five priority areas: security, economic growth, leveraging local strengths, connectivity, and people. Among the actions are facilitating access to funding through the EastInvest initiative and promoting digital connectivity and transport infrastructure. The Commission will initiate an annual political dialogue to assess progress, with the first event scheduled for February 26, 2026.
