On Friday, the European Union announced the extension of sanctions against Iran in response to the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route through which approximately 20% of the world's hydrocarbons transit. Iran's actions, which target ships passing through this strait, are considered by Brussels to be contrary to international law. The EU has decided to include individuals and entities involved in threatening freedom of navigation in the Middle East in the sanctions regime. Possible sanctions include travel bans in EU space, asset freezes, and prohibitions on business with those on the blacklist. These measures are intended to protect navigation and respond to the challenges posed by Iran's actions in the region.
