A court in the Netherlands has ruled that Meta must provide Facebook and Instagram users with simpler options for chronological feeds, without profiling algorithms.

The judges have established that the current design of Meta's platforms violates the European Regulation on Digital Services, requiring the company to implement a direct method for opting out of personalized recommendations within two weeks. The court emphasized that users must have the option to keep preferences for a chronological feed, considering that Meta's current practice is a manipulative design model. Meta has announced that it will appeal, arguing that the issue should be managed by the European Commission.
