A tragedy occurred in Cebu, Philippines, where a collapse of a private landfill led to the death of one person and the disappearance of 38 workers. The city's mayor, Nestor Archival, announced on Facebook that 12 employees were rescued and hospitalized, but that search and rescue operations continue with the support of several agencies. The incident happened Thursday afternoon when a 'mountain' of garbage collapsed on workers at the Binaliw landfill. Approximately 100 garbage collectors were buried under the rubble. Authorities have not determined the cause of the collapse, noting that it had not rained in the area. Many of the victims are from the nearby town of Consolacion.
