The British government has announced a bill aimed at extending regulations for streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, to align with the standards applied to television channels. These services will be overseen by Ofcom, the British media regulatory agency, which will be able to receive complaints and impose financial penalties in case of violations.

The British Ministry of Culture has emphasized that many VoD services are not regulated at the same level as television, which creates risks for the public. The bill applies to platforms with over 500,000 monthly users and includes accessibility requirements, such as subtitles for 80% of content and audio descriptions for 10%. The new regulatory code will come into effect one year after publication, giving platforms up to four years to comply.
