The French nuclear aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, accompanied by a strike group, is heading towards the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, according to an announcement from the French military.
This deployment takes place in the context of the joint efforts of France and Great Britain to prepare an international mission to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic area through which nearly one-fifth of the world's oil supplies pass. The carrier group recently crossed the Suez Canal and is expected to remain at sea for between four and five months. During a recent meeting in London, British and French officials emphasized the importance of establishing a multinational mission to secure the strait, involving over 44 countries. The mission will only be carried out after a lasting peace is established in the region, according to statements from the leaders.
