The Ecuadorian government has announced an increase in customs duties on imports from Colombia, raising them from 50% to 100% starting May 1, citing the non-implementation of border security measures by Colombia.

This decision comes after Ecuador previously raised taxes from 30% to 50% at the end of February, justifying it by the insufficient efforts of Colombia in combating drug trafficking. Colombian President Gustavo Petro harshly criticized the measures, stating that they suggest a loss of value in the trade agreements in the region and called Ecuador's actions "monstrous." Colombian officials also emphasized that Ecuador should seek common solutions to ensure the energy security of the region. Colombia has rejected accusations of non-implementation of security measures, stating that it is conducting joint operations with Ecuadorian security forces.

Tensions have recently escalated, including through a diplomatic dispute related to former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, whom Petro considers a political prisoner. Ecuador reacted by recalling its ambassador from Colombia and suspending scheduled working groups for cooperation.
