The raid on Sputnik's headquarters in Azerbaijan reflects escalating tensions between Baku and Moscow after the agency's offices were closed in February. The Azerbaijani Interior Ministry carried out an operation and local media reported the arrest of two Russian undercover agents. Russia's reaction was swift, expressing concern for journalists. In addition, relations have also deteriorated due to recent incidents, including allegations of downing an airplane and violence against the Azerbaijani community in Russia. Azerbaijan's culture ministry canceled Russia-related cultural events, citing systematic violence.
