The drill includes air raid sirens, sheltering residents and suspending traffic. It runs in parallel with the annual Han Kuang military exercises, designed to test Taiwan's reaction to potential conflict. Rising tensions in the region are being fueled by China's claims over Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory.
