Switzerland announced on Wednesday that it is considering canceling the purchase of the American Patriot air defense system due to significant delays in its delivery.
Swiss Defense Minister Martin Pfister stated that deliveries have been delayed because the U.S. decided to prioritize deliveries to Ukraine and the Middle East in the context of the conflict with Iran. The initial delivery timeframe, set for the period 2026-2028, has been postponed by at least four to five years, and prices have increased significantly, with an estimated rise of up to 50%. Pfister mentioned that Switzerland is currently negotiating all possible options with the United States, including a possible termination of the contract. The situation is complicated by the restrictions imposed by Washington on the funds paid by Switzerland for the F-35A aircraft, intended to cover the costs of the Patriot program.
The Ministry of Defense is expected to present a final report to the Federal Council by the end of June, and Switzerland is now examining European options, including the SAMP/T system.
