Canada, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, has announced plans to acquire a fleet of GlobalEye early warning aircraft from the Swedish group Saab, instead of the American competitor Boeing, which has faced delays and cost overruns with the E-7 Wedgetail model.

Carney stated that this decision will build Canada's strategic autonomy, create jobs, and strengthen the country's position as a global leader. Saab has also promised investments in research and development in Canada. Although details about the number of aircraft and the cost of the contract have not been specified, military officials previously mentioned the intention to acquire six aircraft. Canada aims to reduce dependence on American suppliers and improve relations with the European defense sector.

Additionally, Canada has an agreement to purchase 88 F-35 aircraft from Lockheed Martin, but Carney has requested a review of the order following the imposition of tariffs by the U.S.
