Experts warn that Sweden is moving away from criminal rehabilitation policies towards mass incarceration similar to the US model. The Swedish government has decided to lease up to 600 places in Estonian prisons to deal with prison overcrowding amid an alarming rise in the number of inmates. Following tougher policies, estimates show the number could reach 41,000 by 2034. The move is criticized by observers, who point to the negative impact on young people and the risks associated with a punitive approach.
