German police have detained a suspect after a fire broke out on Friday evening at the Kehlsteinhaus, the building in Bavaria known as the “Eagle’s Nest,” formerly used by Adolf Hitler. The fire engulfed the property located above the town of Berchtesgaden, at an altitude of 1,834 meters. No casualties were reported.
The alarm was raised at around 9:50 p.m. after a smoke detector signaled the presence of smoke. Approximately 200 firefighters were mobilized, but difficult access and the need to use full respiratory protection equipment hampered the response. When the teams arrived, the building was completely engulfed in flames, and no one was found inside.
Authorities have not yet established the origin of the fire. The criminal investigation is examining whether the detained suspect was involved, and investigators are also considering the possibility of arson. According to the German press, police may have identified a motorcyclist at the scene.
Built between 1937 and 1938, the Kehlsteinhaus was part of the Obersalzberg complex. The building survived the Second World War and has operated since 1952 as a restaurant and exhibition space.
