Nuremberg Airport in Germany was temporarily closed on Tuesday after a suspected air emergency emerged, police and airport representatives announced. The measure was taken shortly before a plane arriving from the Greek island of Corfu was due to land.
The aircraft was escorted by Eurofighter jets and landed safely at the airport. However, flight operations were suspended, and police secured the area to carry out checks.
At the time the information was released, authorities had not confirmed that an emergency situation existed. A spokesperson for the municipal police said the suspicion had not been “confirmed so far,” without providing details about the nature of the alert.
The size of the operation deployed at the airport was not known. The incident took place at Nuremberg Airport, the second-largest city in the state of Bavaria after its capital, Munich. The resumption of flights was expected to depend on the outcome of the authorities’ checks.
