Sudan is in a fierce conflict between the regular army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary forces known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo ('Hemedti'). The army controls the eastern part of the country, including the capital Khartoum, while the RSF dominates the west, particularly the Darfur region, which has been severely affected by violence. International negotiations for a ceasefire have failed, with both sides rejecting proposals due to fears of legitimizing the opponent's control. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, is fueled by ethnic tensions and a history of violence, with the RSF having roots in the janjawid militias. The humanitarian crisis is alarming, with approximately 9 million people displaced and millions suffering from severe food insecurity. Additionally, international attention on the conflict is waning, and the lack of compromise between the parties risks worsening the situation for civilians.
