A feasibility study conducted by German experts in Herrenknecht tunnels has established that drilling an underwater tunnel between Gibraltar and Morocco is technically feasible. The project, estimated at 8.8 billion euros, would have a length of 42 kilometers, of which 27 are underwater, with a maximum depth of 420 meters, much greater than the Channel Tunnel. Discussions for this project began in 1979 and were resumed in 2021, when the United Kingdom and Morocco started negotiations for a crossing between Gibraltar and Tangier. A detailed plan will be developed by the Spanish firm Ineco by 2027, with hopes of government approval in the same year.
The tunnel would revolutionize the transport of goods between Europe and Africa, reducing the travel time from Madrid to Casablanca from 12 hours to 5.5 hours by train. However, the project faces significant challenges, including the great depth of the Strait of Gibraltar, strong currents, and seismic activity in the area, which could affect the stability of such structures. Additionally, any construction would need to avoid interfering with the busy maritime routes in the area.
