The announcement came in the context in which President Donald Trump requested the Department of Transportation to allow the production and circulation in the domestic market of "microcar" type vehicles, similar to the Japanese Kei. Fiat CEO, Olivier François, mentioned that additional details will be communicated next year.
Although Stellantis claims that the decision to launch Topolino is not directly related to Trump's statements, the company was already analyzing the interest of the American market. Topolino, called "the mouse" in Italian, is produced in Morocco and is classified as an electric quadricycle with a range of up to 75 km. Sales of mini vehicles have traditionally been weak in the USA, with the example of the Fiat 500 showing a drastic decline in popularity.
