The automotive group Stellantis is in advanced discussions with Leapmotor to develop an electric SUV under the Opel brand, which will utilize Chinese technology and will be produced at the plant in Zaragoza, Spain. The agreement could help Stellantis reduce costs and development time for the electric model, in the context of the company reorienting its strategy towards hybrid vehicles. CEO Antonio Filosa will present a new strategic plan on May 21. The new Opel model will use Leapmotor's compact SUV architecture B10, with production estimated to start in 2028, targeting 50,000 vehicles annually. Leapmotor will provide essential technologies, while Opel will handle the exterior design.

Negotiations began at the end of 2025, and an agreement could be finalized soon. Stellantis is also considering the use of Leapmotor technology for the next generation of the Opel Mokka SUV. Although it has reduced investments in electrification, electric vehicles remain an important part of Stellantis's strategy, especially in the European market.
