Frank Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, stated that Donald Trump's reelection for a second term will cause a deep rift in the relations between Germany and the United States. In a prepared speech for an event of the Foreign Ministry in Berlin, Steinmeier emphasized that transatlantic relations will not return to the level they were before January 20, 2025, the date when Trump could assume the presidency again. Comparing this situation to the beginning of the War in Ukraine, he stated that there will be no return in relations with Russia before that date.
Steinmeier also highlighted the need to reduce Germany's dependence on the United States in the field of defense and technology, calling for the development of European capabilities to counter the technological superiority of other powers. The German president emphasized the importance of building on Europe's talents and ethical standards to influence both foreign and domestic policy.
