SPP, a state-owned gas supplier in Slovakia, plans to secure all of its gas needs from Russia in 2024 amid an EU ban on spot purchases. While all EU countries are aiming to be off Russian gas by 2027, Slovakia and Hungary could benefit from exemptions. SPP commercial director Michal Lalik points out that Russian gas is the most cost-effective. SPP is also preparing for alternatives in case it can no longer buy gas from Russia, but remains skeptical about the impact of switching off Russian gas on the European economy.
