A 62-year-old police officer from the Civil Guard died during the disembarkation of passengers from the MV Hondius, following an outbreak of hantavirus.

A police officer from the Spanish Civil Guard died on Sunday after suffering a heart attack during the operation to evacuate passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius, which was in the port of Granadilla de Abona in Tenerife, where an emergency protocol had been established due to an outbreak of hantavirus detected on board.

The 62-year-old agent was participating in security activities and coordinating the controlled disembarkation of passengers, in a complex intervention carried out alongside medical teams and health authorities. Meanwhile, Spanish and international authorities continue to monitor the situation, while the WHO has stated that the outbreak is localized and cannot be compared to the Covid-19 pandemic.
