Spain has decided to permanently withdraw its ambassador from Israel, marking a significant escalation of diplomatic tensions between the two nations. This measure comes in the context of Madrid's firm opposition to the recent military actions of the US and Israel against Iran. The permanent withdrawal follows a previous decision in September, when the ambassador was recalled to Spain in response to the restrictions imposed by Madrid on aircraft and ships transporting arms to Israel. Diplomatic relations have already been affected by Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The Israeli embassy in Spain is also led by a chargé d'affaires, after Israel recalled its ambassador in protest against Spain's recognition of a Palestinian state. Tensions have also increased following the attacks on Iran, and President Trump threatened a total trade embargo against Spain, accusing it of opposing military actions.
