Slovakia has increased the price of diesel only for foreign drivers, despite EU warnings.

Slovakia has decided to impose a tariff of 2.012 euros per liter of diesel for foreign drivers, a price 30% higher than that applied to locals. This measure, adopted on March 26, 2026, aims to prevent a fuel crisis, in the context where the European Commission has warned that the decision is illegal, violating the principle of equality within the European Union. The Slovak government, made up of populists, social democrats, and ultra-nationalists, justifies this measure by the supply issues caused by the closure of the Druzhba pipeline.

The price for foreign drivers is based on the average prices in neighboring countries, and Slovakia has become an attractive destination for drivers from Austria and Poland, where diesel is more expensive. In Romania, the price of diesel recently increased by 2 lei per liter, and the government adopted an Emergency Ordinance to limit the commercial markup on fuels.
