A 21-year-old woman reported that she was sexually assaulted on Sunday, around 1:50 a.m., in a bathroom of an Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity near the University of Chicago. According to the police report, she was partially undressed and “not fully conscious,” while a man was in the same room. The victim’s friends were reportedly initially prevented from entering.
The university announced that it had identified a person of interest who is not a student and has been barred from campus. No arrests have been made. The fraternity maintains that there is no evidence of its members’ involvement.
The case reignites the debate over fraternity safety, following allegations of gang rape at Cornell and the suspension of their parties. The University of Arizona has likewise halted fraternity activities.
