Several people were injured on Saturday following an explosion at the international airport in Riyadh, according to statements by eyewitnesses and people informed about the incident. Travelers were evacuated from certain areas of the airport, and more than 12 ambulances were seen heading toward the terminal.
One witness reported seeing an explosion and several injured people lying on the airport floor. By the time the information was published, the Saudi government’s press office and the civil aviation authority had not responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. The exact circumstances of the explosion and the number of victims had not been officially announced.
The incident comes amid an intensification of missile attacks launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, allies of Iran, against Saudi Arabia. The airport in Riyadh was targeted twice this week.
Kuwait Airways announced the cancellation of flights to and from Riyadh, citing the “security situation.” Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways also canceled several flights, with some suspensions extended until Monday.
