The military coalition led by Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday a new attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the fourth incident of this kind this week. An unidentified projectile hit passenger terminal number 4 and caused a fire, according to General Turki Al-Malki, the coalition’s spokesman.
In a separate statement, the official said that air defenses had intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile near the airport. No casualties were reported following Sunday’s attack.
The incident comes a day after the deadliest attack on the kingdom in more than ten years. Saturday’s attack on the airport left at least 12 dead and more than 300 injured, while air operations were temporarily suspended. The two previous attacks this week caused four deaths and damaged a Saudi commercial aircraft.
The attacks were attributed to the Iran-backed Houthi group, amid intensifying confrontations in Yemen. The coalition led by Riyadh supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government and announced that it would retaliate. Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government have carried out hundreds of strikes on areas controlled by the Houthis, who claim that the bombardments have killed civilians. Flights from Riyadh were rerouted, and the Houthi group urged commercial aircraft to avoid Saudi airspace.
