The investigation centers on the possible use of forged proxies and medical certificates in the October 2024 vote, in which Guy D'haeseleer of Vlaams Belang won 47.7% of the vote. Although D'haeseleer has not been arrested, the mayor denies the fraud allegations. Under Belgian law, voters with health problems can proxy vote, but using false documents is illegal. The investigation was launched after a report by an election observer.
