The Spanish banking group Banco Santander has surpassed for the first time in the last eight years the giant in the fashion industry Inditex, becoming the most valuable publicly listed company in Spain.
The market capitalization of Santander reached 175.9 billion euros, while Inditex, the owner of the Zara brand, recorded a market value of 174.4 billion euros. This change reflects the rise in European bank stocks and a shift in investor focus towards the financial sector, in the context of rising interest rates by the European Central Bank.
Santander's shares have increased by approximately 172% since the beginning of 2025, while Inditex's shares have stagnated. Retail companies, including Inditex, are facing weaker demand from consumers due to economic pressures and the high cost of living, highlighting the shift in investor preferences in a challenging economic environment.
