The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the chargé d'affaires of Germany, Bernd Finke, in response to the German government's accusations regarding Russia's involvement in a drone attack on the airport in Leipzig, carried out on August 4. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Aleksandr Gruško, stated that Russia does not intend to sever diplomatic relations with Germany, but accused Berlin of escalating tensions.

President Vladimir Putin associated the accusations with the declining popularity of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, highlighting the economic mistakes of the German authorities. Germany stated that Russia is responsible for the hybrid attack and announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn. At the same time, leaders of the European Union and NATO asserted that pressure on Russia will continue and intensify.
