Several regions of Ukraine were hit by Russian missiles on Wednesday, with energy infrastructure in Kyiv being the main targets. At least three people were killed, according to the Ukrainian emergency service, and the attacks caused interruptions to the electricity supply in the capital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that several energy facilities had been hit. AFP journalists reported hearing powerful explosions in the city. A power plant in the capital, including thermal power plant number 4, had already been hit during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had not received warnings in advance from its Western allies regarding the ballistic missile attacks. He accused Russia of not respecting US President Donald Trump's statements regarding a ceasefire on energy infrastructure.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian systems detected the missiles only when they were near Kyiv. The air force had previously cited the possibility that the attacks were carried out with missiles that were difficult to detect or that the information had not been transmitted for technical reasons.
The strikes come amid a deterioration in the relationship between Trump and Zelenskyy. The US president criticized Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries and recently suggested that Ukraine might need a new president. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv has officially confirmed an agreement on the energy ceasefire announced by Trump.
